THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD
The Earth is overwhelmed by non-biodegradable waste, landfill is full and a single-use plastic bag will take over 200 years to decompose.
Using wool to represent nature and plastic bag yarn to wrap around and smother the wool, my abstract Earth sculpture will form the centrepiece of an immersive installation.
Representing nature, the net that sits below my abstract earth sculpture is ready to catch the earth when it falls from the weight of all of the waste plastic that is overwhelming it.
My audience is invited to walk around the netted plinth and watch while the Earth turns above it. When the exhibition ends the Earth will fall and if it is strong enough the net will catch it, if not it will crash through and hit the ground.
I invite you to watch the Earth turn slowly and to listen to sales assistants from countries around the globe asking if you would like a bag with your shopping. The soundscape represents the volume of people leaving shops with single-use plastic bags, adding to the global issue of plastic pollution.
