SCULPTURE

FELT MUSHROOMS: Wet Felt, Sculpture and stitch

AS A THEATRE PRODUCTION TEACHER AND STUDENT OF THE CREATIVE ARTS, I WORK ACROSS SEVERAL DISCIPLINES INCLUDING THEATRE DESIGN TEXTILES, SCULPTURE PRINTMAKING, PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM.

MOST OF MY WORK INVOLVES TEXTILES IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, BUT I WOULD NOT LIMIT MYSELF TO TEXTILES ALONE AND OFTEN MY WORK INVOLVES COMBINING DISCIPLINES TO ACHIEVE AN EFFECTIVE OUTCOME.

FUTILITY: Wet Felt, Sculpture, Alcohol Inks

Creative Manifesto

For too long I have been exploring my creativity with little direction. I experiment widely and create freely but lack focus which means that I start things and never really feel that my work is finished. I find it easy to reflect on how I can improve my work as I always feel that my work can be improved. I am writing my manifesto to create a set of rules that will guide and focus my work keeping in mind my ethical values.

  • Gather materials widely – Using materials that are natural or that would otherwise go to waste is key to my practice.

  • Create daily – Whether recording a sound, taking a photograph, drawing a sketch or working for hours on a sculpture, it is important to consider and work on my art every day.

  • Leave inhibitions behind – Joining in and exploring new ideas whenever possible is the key to thinking outside of the box.

  • Experiment widely – Test new materials, new styles of creating, new methods of mark-making.

  • Go outside – Walk around, discover new places, get lost in an environment and record your surroundings.

  • Revisit ideas – Look back at creative work from the past and if something could be changed/improved take the time to revisit it and look at it in a different way.

  • Have an open mind – Say yes to new ideas, even when you are unsure whether something will work or not.

  • Promote equality & diversity – Be proud to be an older female artist, promote and support work by other female artists and embrace and promote diversity.

  • Respect the environment – Create art that does not pollute or damage the environment and use waste/scrap materials to create artworks.

  • Collaborate – Be open to working with others, sharing ideas and skillsets to produce exciting outcomes.
